Families Should Utilize Trails
By: Christina Hughey
People of all ages can benefit from using trails. We often hear that obesity rates are at an all-time high, twice what they were two decades ago. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics there are many reasons for this. One big reason parents say for inactivity in their children, is fearing for their child’s safety. This coordinates with studies that show us children that live in unsafe neighborhoods have a 30-60% higher chance of being obese or overweight than children living in different conditions. Kids that didn’t have the opportunity to get outside and exercise were more likely to be overweight. People of all ages need the outdoors.
Fortunately, no matter where you live, you most likely have access to trails. Whether trails are close to your house or a little bit of a drive, there are many free trails that can be visited. Riding a bike on a trail or walking a trail can be an excellent family activity. Many will hardly even realize they are exercising. This is a great way for the whole family to get more active and have some fun together!
Don’t know where any trails are? There are many websites that help you find local trails near you. I will link a website I like below. This website is great, because you can simply type in your town and instantly see trails and their descriptions. There is even the option to browse by activity! Whether you like running, biking, horseback riding, or more.
