Mitchell Park Playspace
Built from Masterplan by DG2
Kirkwood, Missouri
Following the master plan developed with Kirkwood residents, DG2 Design has completed improvements to Mitchell Park that deliver on the priorities raised during community outreach: accessibility, drainage, and the character that makes the park special.
New pathways and gathering areas now meet ADA requirements, giving every visitor equal access to the park. Natural-grade sculpting and rain gardens redirect water away from active areas, resolving the drainage issues that once limited use of the space; plantings selected to attract pollinators and showcase seasonal color add educational value, while tree health assessments preserved the mature canopy that gives the park its shade and character, replacing only the trees in decline.
The finished park balances new opportunities with what the community asked to keep: the central lawn, canopy, and intimate atmosphere residents value. New swings, climbing elements, and a small mist feature for cooling off give children more ways to play, while the central lawn itself now benefits from improved grading and drainage for year-round use — together transforming Mitchell Park into a more inclusive, sustainable, and enjoyable community space.
